3 Tips for Photographing a Wedding in the Rain

As a PEI wedding photographer and photography educator, I am here to give you a few tips for photographing a wedding in the rain. I can remember going into my first season of weddings and checking the weather CONSTANTLY, hoping that all of the wedding days would be sunny. But now as a seasoned wedding photographer, I almost prefer a little bit of rain over a bright sunny day. I wanted to put this post together for all of you photographers just starting out so that you can take these tips, relieve stress, and go into the wedding day with confidence.

Photographing a Wedding in the Rain – Tip #1

Bite the bullet and purchase some clear umbrellas so that you don’t have to rely on your couple to provide them for you. It is much easier to always know they are in your trunk incase the weather turns suddenly.

Have a list of locations that you can go to if it is raining too heavily or if there is also wind and therefore the rain isn’t coming straight down.

For example, a veranda, an awning, or a group of trees. Here are a few spots that I’ve used in the past.

I think the best advice that I can give as a wedding photographer is to be prepared for the unexpected so that if and when it happens, you are able to stay calm and project confidence to your couple. It is also always a plus when your couple doesn’t care if they get wet 🙂
