4 Tips For When You’re Ready to Buy A Photography Course!

A photography course can be such a good investment in your career. This is your chance to learn more about your craft while finding ways to establish your business. But before you start a class, there are a few things to consider to ensure you can get something centered around your unique style. As a wedding photography educator, I love working with my clients to help them grow their careers. If you are looking to buy a photography course, here is what you need to keep in mind!

Your Guide to Knowing What To Look For When You Buy A Photography Course

Expertise of the Instructor

The very first thing you need to consider is your photography course instructor before you buy. Not only will you be looking for experience, but you also want to check out their style and make sure it matches yours. After all, the most skilled nature photographer really isn’t going to help you much if you are trying to become an editorial wedding photographer! Check out their work online and make sure it aligns with your vision. Then, once you think you have your person, check the reviews from former students if possible. A lot of classes tend to rely on name power above all else, offering surface-level sessions with someone who is just there for a quick paycheck.

Course Content & Value

Pretty much any good photography course is going to lay out its syllabus in the description so you can know exactly what you are buying. Before you commit, spend some time reading through it and make sure the highlighted points match your area of interest. If you see two different courses that might match what you need, it helps to stick with a lower-level course and work your way up to the next session. Oh, and if the course doesn’t tell you ahead of time what to expect? Run away. Normally, these sessions aren’t worth your time or your money.

Support Options

If you are considering an online photography course, check to see how they work with their students throughout each session before you buy. Will you have technical support? Message forums? Interactive workbooks? What about access to your instructor? If you are taking an in-person class, check to make sure you will be able to get feedback on your work. This is going to be one of the most instrumental tools when it comes to your growth!

Format

Lastly, think about the format and if it will work for you. If you opt for a traditional session, check to see if it’s collaborative or if it’s strictly a seminar teaching you the basics. When it comes to online classes, I would advise sticking to options that offer text-based sessions as well as informative videos. This way, you will be able to interact with the lessons while learning at your own speed.
